What happens when you win a jackpot online, step by step
The wheel stops on Mega and a number lands on your balance. This is what usually happens next based on the jackpot terms and conditions of the casinos we've reviewed.
The win is checked
The casino reviews your game logs to verify your spin. Jackpot City has terms to hold any payout if it wants to investigate further.
You prove who you are
ID, proof of address, payment method, and where your funds come from. Grand Mondial has terms to request notarized documents.
The payout rules kick in
What determines if you get it all at once? There are daily or weekly limits on withdrawals. If jackpots are exempt from these limits, you'll receive your winnings all at once.
The news goes out
The studio may announce the amount and game you played. Winners are almost always anonymous or represented by initials only.
The longest wait is usually in Step 2. A check you do before you play takes a few days. A check you do after a seven-figure win and the documents don't completely line up with your account...well, then you have to wait a few weeks. The documents are the biggest hassle.
Is a jackpot win paid in full?
Each casino has its own terms, not the jackpot. These are the terms of the four capped casinos we reviewed.
| Casino | Normal limit | What the terms say about jackpots |
|---|---|---|
| Jackpot City | GBP 10,000 a day; €4,000 a week for big winners | Exempt from the €4,000 weekly rule and the bonus cap. The daily line has no exception. |
| Spin Casino | Same terms as Jackpot City | Same carve-out: "All progressive wins are exempt." |
| 7Bit | 0.12 BTC a week, 0.48 BTC a month | "Progressive jackpot wins are paid in full and do not count toward these limits." |
| Grand Mondial | $4,000 a week for big winners | No exception for jackpots written in the terms. |
Exceptions are made for jackpots at three of the four casinos. Grand Mondial doesn’t make an exception, which means in theory a winner of Mega Moolah could be paid out at $4,000 a week. The group’s winners page says they’ve paid out millions, but the terms don’t say anything about a lump sum.
Jackpot City has an otherwise decent clause, and has a weekly exception for jackpots, but their daily limit doesn't say anything about jackpots. If you win, contact support about the payment and how it will be made, and keep a copy of their response. For a full comparison of all the casinos and their clauses, check out our progressive jackpot casinos page.
The checks after a big jackpot win
Every casino checks big winners. How long you have to contact them to verify your identity and what happens if you don't, varies from casino to casino.
- 7Bit: photo ID, proof of address and payment method, and possibly a phone call. If it can't reach you within two weeks, the withdrawal is cancelled.
- Grand Mondial: can ask for notarised documents and void winnings if you don't provide them.
- Rainbet: 72 hours to finish the ID check, and refusing it "will result in confiscation of funds".
Use the same name, address and payment method for all transactions, starting from your first deposit. Most problems stem from using different methods. After the money lands
This isn't the end. There are three more things to sort out.
- Tax
Whether you owe tax depends on your country and sometimes on where the casino is licensed. Our are casino winnings taxed guide covers the main countries, from their tax authorities.
- Privacy
Studios announce the amount and the game. You don't have to go public, and the big Mega Moolah and WowPot winners almost never have.
- Stopping
The hardest step. Reddit is full of players who won big and played it back. A self-exclusion or a deposit limit, set the same day, protects the win.

Jackpot win FAQ
What happens when you win a jackpot online?
The casino checks the win and once the win is verified by the casino, it pays out according to the withdrawal rules. Some casinos pay jackpot winners in full, while others pay in weekly installments. See the steps.
Do online casinos pay jackpots in full?
Some do. The best say so in their terms. 7Bit writes that progressive jackpot wins “are paid in full.” Grand Mondial allows $4,000 a week for big winners, with no jackpot exception.
How long does it take to get paid after winning a jackpot?
Usually between a few days to a week if your account is already verified, longer if the checks start after the win. Daily or weekly limits can cause it to take longer at casinos that don’t exempt jackpots.
Do jackpot winners have to go public?
Not in full. Studio announcements provide the amount won, game, and sometimes casino and country. Winners are anonymous or shown by initials.
Do I pay tax on a jackpot win?
It depends on where you live. Some countries tax gambling winnings. See our tax guide for more info.
