Are Casino Winnings Taxed? What 8 Tax Authorities Say
How much you win isn't as important as where you live. In which case, where the casino is licensed can also be important. Here are eight examples.

Are casino winnings taxed? Country by country
What eight tax authorities say about a casual player's winnings. Each link is to the authority's webpage.
| Country | Taxed? | What the tax authority says |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Tax-free | Winnings are tax-free "regardless of the amount won". The tax falls on the operator's profits instead. (Gambling Commission) |
| Ireland | Tax-free | Betting and lottery winnings are not chargeable gains. (Revenue) |
| Canada | Tax-free | Winnings aren't taxed unless gambling is carried on as a business. (CRA) |
| Australia | Tax-free | Gambling winnings of an ordinary player aren't income. (ATO) |
| Sweden | Depends | Tax-free from Swedish or EEA-licensed games. From other casinos, net wins over 100 kr are taxed at 30%. (Skatteverket) |
| Norway | Depends | Wins over NOK 10,000 are taxable unless the game is Norwegian or regulated to the same standard in the EEA. (Skatteetaten) |
| Finland | Depends | Winnings from games run outside Finland or the EU/EEA are taxed as earned income. (Vero) |
| United States | Taxed | "Gambling winnings are fully taxable", and every win must be reported. (IRS) |
Most of the English speaking countries leave casual players alone. Wins in the UK, Ireland, Canada and Australia are all tax free, due to being regarded as luck, not income. There is no case on record at the Australia tax office where the winnings of a mere punter has been taxable.
"Casual" is the key word. Canada and Australia can tax gambling run like a business: organised, frequent, and done for a living. A professional poker player isn't a weekend slot player in the eyes of either tax office.
Where the casino is licensed can decide the tax
The same win at a casino can be taxable in some Nordic countries.
- Sweden
Wins from Swedish-licensed games, or games aimed at the Swedish or EEA market under EEA rules, are tax-free. From any other casino, you add up wins minus stakes for each operator over the year, and pay 30% on the net if it's over 100 kr (Skatteverket).
- Norway
Wins over NOK 10,000 are taxable. The exemption covers Norsk Tipping, Norsk Rikstoto and games regulated to the same standard in another EEA country (Skatteetaten).
- Finland
Wins from betting, lottery and slot games run outside Finland or the EU/EEA are earned income. Slot stakes can't be deducted, and you have to report the wins yourself (Vero).
This is important for crypto casinos. All ten of the casinos reviewed here are licensed outside the EEA, and are in Curaçao, Anjouan, Kahnawake or Tobique. For players in Sweden, Norway or Finland, a win at any of these casinos would likely be taxable.
The casinos will not report you to the tax office, and will not withhold anything for tax. You will need to report it.
Casino winnings tax in the United States
The US is the most strict of the eight. All winnings are taxable, even ones nobody reports for you.
Report all of it
Report winnings on Form 1040, Schedule 1. Report these winnings even if you don't receive a Form W-2G.
The W-2G form
A payer is not required to send you a Form W-2G to indicate that your winnings are taxable. Not receiving a Form W-2G does not make your winnings nontaxable.
Losses, if you itemise
You can only deduct gambling losses on Schedule A and you can only deduct them to the extent of the winnings you report.
Keep a diary
The IRS requires you to report your winnings and losses and backs this up by requiring you to keep statements or receipts.
This is a summary of the rules provided by the IRS itself, Topic 419. The loss rule catches many people off-guard. If you take the standard deduction (as most people do), losses do not reduce the tax on your winnings at all.
A casino's transaction history is probably the easiest to keep. Be sure to save it before you close your account, as some casinos delete it.
Are crypto casino winnings taxed?
Winning money in cryptocurrency presents an additional question: what happens to the cryptocurrency after the win?
- The win itself: treated like any other gambling win in your country. Australia's tax office says gains and losses directly from gambling are left out of capital gains tax.
- What you do next: if you keep the coins and sell them later, that sale can be taxed. In Australia, your cost base is the coin's value on the day you won it (ATO).
- Your records: note the date, the amount and the value in your own currency for each withdrawal. Crypto prices move, and the tax office will want the figure from that day.
There are examples of large crypto wins where this information would be pertinent. A huge win on our biggest streamer wins page can rise or fall thousands of dollars in a single day, before it is ever converted to cash.
What to do before a big win, not after
None of this is tax advice. Rules change, and your situation may differ. Three habits still help everywhere.
- Check
Read your own tax authority's page on gambling winnings. Every row in the table above links to one.
- Record
Keep deposit and withdrawal history from every casino you use, in your own files.
- Ask
For a life-changing win, speak to a tax adviser in your country before the money moves.

Play it safe
Gambling is for adults only (18+, or older where local law says so). Treat every deposit as money spent on entertainment, never as a way to make money. If it stops being fun, take a break with the casino's own tools or talk to Gambling Therapy, which offers free support in many languages.
